Ex-DEEP PURPLE Keyboardist JON LORD: Durham Concerto Audio, Video Samples Available

Former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord's The Durham Concerto will be released on CD on January 28, 2008 via UK's Avie Records.

The Durham Concerto by Jon Lord was performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mischa Darmev at the Durham Cathedral in England on October 20. Jon took part in the performance as a soloist playing Hammond.

The concerto, which was packed with more than 1,000 music fans, was commissioned to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Durham University, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The CD features the studio recording of the Durham Concerto, and you can listen to selected excerpts below (courtesy of Lord's official web site, JonLord.org):

The world premiere of the Durham Concerto on October 20, 2007 at Durham Cathedral was filmed. There are no immediate plans to release this, but this three-minute video collage — which can be viewed below — is a good representation of the evening.

An 18-minute audio interview with Jon Lord conducted by Norway's Metal Express Radio (web site) has been posted online at this location.

Jon Lord will join the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for three exclusive Australian concert performances next year. He will apparently perform The Concerto as part of the "ASO Plays Deep Purple" concerts booked for the Adelaide Festival Theatre on March 27, March 28 and March 29, 2008. Jon is quoted as saying that "The ASO are well regarded internationally and I am thrilled to be working with them in these magical concerts."

Lord, 65, is perhaps best known for his four- or five-minute rock songs, but he has always written longer pieces as well.

It was his desire to concentrate on the orchestral works which led him to leave DEEP PURPLE in 2002.
